Liulang Fm

Period:
Neogene

Age Interval:
Late Miocene, N1, (31,32)

Province:
East China Sea

Type Locality and Naming

Basins offshore NE Zhejiang. The type section is in the Longjing No. 2 well located at the Longjing structural belt 420 km southeast of the Shanghai City. It was named and surveyed by Shanghai Comprehensive Marine Geological Party, Ministry of Geology and Mineral Resources in 1985. Geographical coordinates of the type section: 29°52′44″N, 125°56′07″E (GPS).

Lithology and Thickness

Lower part of the formation is characterized by the greyish-white siltstones, siltstones with gravels, light grey muddy siltstones, intercalated with grey mudstones. Upper part of the formation is characterized by the greyish-yellow, greyish-green mudstones intercalated with muddy siltstones and brown coal beds. The thickness is over 1000 m.

Lithology Pattern:
siltstone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The Liulang Fm is in conformable contact with the underlying YuquanNeogene Fm.

Upper contact

The Liulang Fm is in unconformable contact with the overlying Santan Fm.

Regional extent

The Liulang Fm is distributed in southeast Shanghai, and the continental shelf of East China Sea. The lower part of Liulang Fm is revealed in various wells, whereas the upper part is usually eroded. The top of the “placanticline” has been almost all absent but it is over 1000 m thick in the deep trough.
